15/03/2019First Chair of the UK and Ireland Board Retires

Our enormous gratitude was expressed to Barry Symonds as he came to the end of his 2 year stint as the first Chair of the UK and Ireland Board.  Barry has done a sterling job and his enthusiam has been much appreciated.

Barry is pictured here at left receiving an engraved silver salver as a token of our appreciation from Global President, Dr Paul Hampton.

We welcome Keith Blizzard as our new Chairman and look forward to exciting times over the next 2 years.

Following the announcement of Wolverhampton-based company Carillion going into liquidation, a dedicated telephone line and email address have been set up by the Black Country Chamber of Commerce, on behalf of the Carillion taskforce[1], to support local businesses that may be affected by this very sad news.


We are a business focused organisation, and a partner of the Black Country Growth Hub, that would like to support organisations in this troubling time, so if you have any concerns or worries we are here for you. We don’t have all the answers just yet, but as this situation develops we will share the latest updates with you and take your concerns forward to the taskforce group and relevant support agencies.

Keith BlizzardSend Email Keith Blizzard FRICS FCIOB FCIArb FFB FQSi(Hon) With a wealth of experience over more than 30 years in every aspect of construction law, partner Keith Blizzard joined Harrison Clark Rickerbys at the start of 2017. As well as being a highly experienced construction expert accustomed to dealing with contentious issues, Keith is a chartered quantity surveyor, chartered construction manager, chartered arbitrator, panel adjudicator, accredited and panel mediator, accredited dispute board member, forensic surveyor and experienced lecturer. His expertise in adjudication and arbitration have led him to be not only in demand in those roles but also to become a visiting lecturer at universities, including in Helsinki, Sheffield and Birmingham, and at conferences at home and abroad, as well as tutoring post-graduates acquiring professional qualifications. Because he has considerable experience of the whole construction process, he is able to help clients to avoid disputes before, during and following work on-site and can help to resolve any problems that arise to make sure that their commercial interests are protected as well as ensuring that they do not compromise their position by their own actions. Keith’s abilities in this area have been recognised and he is an RICS Accredited Dispute Board Member. Although his background is in construction, his mediation experience has covered disputes of all kinds including landlord and tenant, insurance policy claims, commercial industrial and partnership.


Martin Chambers  Professor Martin Chambers BSc(hons), Adv Dip, HonFQSi, CEnv, PPCIOB, FCIOB, FRICS, MAPM (CPM) A director of Shaylor Group PLC, a UK SME construction business based in the UK Midlands and delivering prestigious projects across the UK. Martin’s particular areas of activity at Shaylor Group being frameworks and innovation Martin started his career as an indentured quantity surveying trainee with George Wimpey & Co. In 1981 he graduated from Aston University with an honours degree in Building, Economics and Measurement and then went on to secure an Advanced Diploma at Salford University in Employment Law. Martin’s work activities have seen him lead some of the UK’s most high profile projects, these include: Project SLAM the 10 year plus programme to update the MoD Single Living Accommodation Estate, The £1.3bn Birmingham Schools for the Future programme and most recently the hugely successful £750m redevelopment of Birmingham’s New Street Station. During Martin’s career, he has achieved a number of prestigious awards and accolades including: In 1995 being named as the APM’s Young Project Manager of the Year, for his work with two international clients, Japanese electronics giant Ricoh and Astra Pharmaceuticals. In 2014 he was named the National and West Midlands Regional winner of Constructing Excellence’s ‘Achiever of the Year Award’. Martin was the President of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) for 2007/2008. He is currently a trustee of the CIOB Benevolent Fund. Outside of work Martin’s life revolves around his passion for fly fishing, academia and his family. Martin is a governor of the University of Wolverhampton, A visiting professor at University of Westminster and an External Examiner at Aston University.
Kirsty Louise Barker  I am starting my route to become a qualified quantity surveyor, studying a BSc Honours degree in quantity surveying at the University of Wolverhampton. In my first year, I am embarking on the following modules: Built Environment Academic and Employment Skills Sustainable Construction Technology (Residential Buildings) BIM and Data Management Built Environment Business and Economics Project Law and Construction Procurement Built Environment Professional DevelopmentI have embraced the opportunity to become the student ambassador on behalf of the Built Environment. This has entailed involvement in many exciting projects, including working with schools; Athena SWAN – a charter established in 2005 by the British equality challenge unit and implemented by the UK resource centre which recognises and celebrates good practice to the advancement of gender equality: representation, progression and success for all; Wikihouse – this is an open-source project for designing and building houses which endeavours to democratise and simplify the construction of sustainable resource-light dwellings; and young women in construction events. Recently I took part in a team building and leadership weekend to enhance my skills. Currently I am working towards an APM-PFQ – a level 6 qualification which offers a fundamental awareness of project management alongside my degree. My early work life consisted of varied roles such as cabin crew, sales and customer service. 6 years ago, I settled into an accounts administration position. Here I have had the opportunity to experience the sales ledger, purchase ledger, nominal ledger and now manage the foreign ledger. In my time here I met my Husband and had my two wonderful boys.A year ago I had the pleasure of launching our first family business alongside my Dad. S Class Travel Ltd, a modern chauffer company. Seeing my dad go after his dream and how happy this made him has inspired me to chase a career of my own and the catalyst for me to join the University of Wolverhampton in order to pursue quantity surveying. My main interest is event organising and party planning. I also enjoy getting involved in challenges to raise money for charity.
Paul HamptonSend Email Dr Paul Hampton is the current Head of Built Environment at the University of Wolverhampton and a Chartered Building Surveyor. His two main areas of expertise are accessible environments and built environment employability skills and their impact on sector productivity. Dr Paul has a BSc Building Surveying, studied at the University of Wolverhampton, an MSc in Business Management from Sheffield Hallam University and a PhD from Middlesex University.Paul is a past chairman for West Midlands RICS, West Midlands ICWCI and is currently serving as a board member on the Global Board of Quantity Surveyors International (QSi).Paul holds outstanding industry knowledge and maintains strong links with over 500 industry contacts. Paul was also one of the original design team members for the Springfield Campus as part of a £100m investment in Architecture, Built Environment and Civil Engineering. Paul also forged the first Industrial Panel Network 4 and hosts various industrial symposia.Paul has designed numerous world exclusive on-line and in-company courses and is currently developing the first UK Nuclear and Demolition degree/MSc qualifications. He has previously acted as programme director and course lead for modules at all levels. More recently he has been engaged in teaching modules in the areas of construction management, project management and quality management. Paul is an avid researcher. He has more than 15 referred articles to his credit published in top conferences. He has also brought in millions of pounds in research funding through various ERDF projects and has successfully bid and won the Construction in the 21st Century Conference for Wolverhampton/London in 2019. During his tenure in academia has held several managerial roles such as Director of Built Environment Climate Change Innovation (BECCI), Entress and head of employability and business engagement.
Suzanne CashSend Email0333 012 4549Suzanne Miller BA(Hons)Suzanne is the QSi Global Business Manager, responsible for the day to day running or the organisation, dealing everything from applications and subscriptions to regional boards, events and the QS Eye magazine.Suzanne graduated with an honours degree in English Literature and French which she followed up with a Business and Secretarial Diploma with French and German. After finishing her studies, Suzanne joined James R Knowles as a Marketing Assistant/PA to the Managing Director, with particular responsibility for running around 300 seminars a year across the UK. Suzanne rose through the ranks obtaining a place on the Knowles Board as Marketing Director in 1998.When Roger Knowles founded the QSi in 2004, Suzanne was enlisted to run the organisation. When she left Knowles in 2006 to set up her own business, she continued in her function as QSi Global Business Manager whilst also working for a number of other clients in marketing and support roles. In her spare time Suzanne is a keen fund raiser for Mcmillan Cancer Support and enjoys cycling.
Peter Hood  Peter Hood BSc (Hons) MRICS MQSi(Hons) Peter has worked in the construction industry for over 35 years, starting as a quantity surveying graduate with George Wimpey (now Taylor Wimpey). Having worked for major contractors for the first 7 years of his career, including Tarmac, Balfour Beatty and Fairclough, in both build and civil engineering, he has since been employed by regional contractors in the UK Midlands. Peter has held Director level positions for the last 17 years, taking a wider responsibility for the overall performance of each business, primarily at operational level, including developing in house training programmes to promote best practice, support ISO accreditations and, ultimately, provide the best service to Clients. Peter’s QS roots have enabled him to balance the commercial and operational demands of contracting with his teams, complementing the work of QSi, in promoting the key role of commercially minded professionals within the built environment.
Barry C SymondsSend Email Barry Symonds, MSc FRICS FCIOB FCABE ACIAT FQSi (Senator h.c. Biberach an der Riss) Barry is currently Managing Director of Symonds Konsult International Ltd (Education and Training Consultants) and is an Educational Advisor for Rapid5D (BIM Solutions). Previously Barry was Head of Property Surveying & Construction (2004-2010) at London South Bank University, UK. He is a chartered quantity surveyor (QS) and construction economist, and has worked for consultancy practices and government organisations in the UK and New Zealand & Fiji. He has published technical publications ( ie ” Design Economics for Built Environment.” Wiley Blackwell 2015.) and presented papers and lectures, in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei, New Zealand, China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Rumania, Czech Republic and Germany. He continues to operate as a visiting professor in Germany and the UK. His current research examines comparative studies between countries and cultures in construction and real estate. He represents the European Board of RICS as an External Examiner in Germany. He has served on many RICS committees, and has held the positions of Chair of the RICS Essex Branch including the QS Division and, was member of RICS Divisional Council, CHOBE and CKE. Barry has carried out External Examiner & Accreditation roles, at a number of UK and overseas Universities and is a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Constructors (City of London), where he is a member of the scholarship & awards committee which provides research grants for industrial scholars in conjunction with others (BRE,CIOB,ICE). He is also a Liveryman in the City Livery Club and a member of the Little Ship Club, in London. Barry’s hobbies include sailing, scuba diving, fishing, German language and culture.
Greg Lawley  Greg Lawley MRICS MQSi, is a Managing Quantity Surveyor at Morgan Sindall Construction & Infrastructure Ltd, currently acting as the commercial lead on the Constructing West Midlands Framework. He began his career at Shaylor Construction, where he spent five years working on various commercial projects across various market sectors including healthcare, office, industrial and higher education. He spent the next three years at Bullock Construction working on projects for the West Midlands police plus student accommodation and assisted living type projects. The last five years have been spent in his current position where he has been working on primarily education along with various local authority type projects.
